I have a strong desire to help others create a working relationship
with their dogs. The exercises, behaviors and tricks that I teach in
class help to strengthen your dog as well create a stronger bond. It is
my belief that dogs are not here to "please" us as many would say, but
that we have to earn their respect and teach them how fun learning can
be. My students come from all walks of life. I have taught competitors in Agility, Flyball, Dock diving, Herding, Schutzhund, French Ring, Obedience, Rally, Disc Dog Freestyle as well as people who just want fun things to do with their dog. I have taught dogs with hip dysplasia, luxating patellas, knee and hip injuries etc. The benefits of core strengthening and body awareness are immeasurable. Fostering dogs for Oregon Friends of Sheltered Animals gave me experience dealing with many types of dogs and behavioral problems. Working on house manners, leash walking, aggression, and many other issues to them get ready for adoption. My three boys are all from rescue and have come with their own set of behaviors or fears to overcome. My three dogs and I have been training in agility for six years. During that time, I have helped teach many foundation agility classes for Columbia Agility Team as well as gained the experience required to title a dog in agility. In addition, training rescue dogs with reactive issues and my own reactive dogs has given me the knowledge to help others with similar areas of difficulties. Having touched the lives of many sheltered animals as well as my own rescue dogs, it is truly an honor to help a troubled dog/handler find their way to a better life |
Core strengthening exercises are
invaluable to the performance and overall health of our dogs. Whether
you have a performance dog or a ball chaser, having good core strength
and body awareness will decrease the chance of injury.
One of my dogs has a very poor jumping style and was knocking bars regularly in agility. A year or so into his training, I found that his hips were out of alignment and his pelvis is rotated forward causing him to be unable to fully extend his hind legs. In addition, his lumbar area was rock hard and allowed for very little movement in his back. At this point I spent my spare time learning about acupressure, massage and core strengthening. It took months working with Force to improve his mobility with a massage/acupressure treatment every other day at home and several trips to the Osteopath. Still today at six years old we do exercises everyday to encourage his hips to move independently and to improve his flexibility. His jumping improved
dramatically and he has increased his strength and flexibility. Because
his hips were out of alignment for so long he is still prone to injury
and poor habits. Consistent exercises and stretching has strengthened his hips,
shoulders, back, hind legs and abs. Over his lifetime, this will help
prevent him from having long term hip issues and decrease the chance of
further injury. This situation has turned my focus to core
strengthening and better body awareness.
